More than just food
Eating and drinking was more than just a daily necessity it was a social gathering, alliances could be created, a show of wealth through feasts and mostly a change from the harsh realities of surviving everyday life.
Thoughts would be focused on how to procure, store and cook what food they had dependant upon the seasons. For all but the elite, the culinary diet would have mostly been the same throughout the year.
A major part of the food consumed would have been what the farm could produce locally grown within cultivated areas

Cooking
Imagine no potatoes, rice, or pasta. No sugar etc,
so now lets enter and explore the viking culinary world
The Hearth
The Hearth was at the centre of the viking age long house; bustling with activity all day long from 'morguns' (breakfast - early morning) to 'rokkr' (twilight).
Cooking
Food was boiled in large and small cauldrons in poorer status familes these would have been a small vessel made of pottery or soapstone, but those of wealthier status would have had several pots and iron cauldrons.

Foods Eaten
Root vegetables such as turnips would be baked in the embers. Meat was cooked outside in cooking pits or spit roasted next to the fire so the fat and juices could be collected.
Everyday Viking cuisine would have comprised a simple yet hearty dishes of porridges, cheese, set or soured dairy products , smoked or dried meat a baked or pickled turnip and the occasional stew. These would probably have a smoky aroma from the open fire
Viking cuisine depended on whom you were dining with, at what occasion you were eating at, who you were and where you wer.
